Control every entry point

Every commercial premises should have a clear record of who enters and who leaves. A visitor register, gate pass system and identity checks at the main gate reduce the chance of unauthorised entry.

Guards should be briefed on approved vendor lists, delivery schedules and staff identification so that routine movement stays smooth while exceptions are challenged politely.

Patrol with purpose

Patrolling is most effective when it is varied. Fixed timings allow observers to predict guard movement, so rounds should cover stairwells, parking areas, rear gates and terrace access at changing intervals.

Each round should check locks, lights, fire exits and unusual signs such as forced panels, unfamiliar vehicles or unattended bags.

Report everything, however small

A daily occurrence book builds a picture of the site over time. Minor incidents — a broken latch, a flickering light near an entrance, an unfamiliar visitor — often matter more in hindsight than they appear at the time.

Clear written handovers between shifts ensure that the next guard knows what to watch for.

Plan for emergencies before they happen

Guards should know evacuation routes, assembly points, fire equipment locations and the contact numbers for police, fire and medical services.

Periodic drills and role-specific training keep responses calm and coordinated when an incident actually occurs.
