Why the festive season needs extra planning

From Dussehra and Diwali through the wedding season, many Lucknow neighbourhoods see more visitors, deliveries, shopping and late-night functions. Homes are often left empty during travel, shops hold more stock and cash, and societies receive a constant stream of couriers and guests. A little planning before the season keeps celebrations safe.

For households travelling during festivals

Tell only trusted neighbours or your society office that you will be away. Avoid announcing travel plans on social media until you return. Lock all doors, windows and balcony access, and keep valuables in a secure place rather than in obvious cupboards.

Ask a neighbour to collect newspapers and parcels, and consider a timer light so the house does not look empty. Share an emergency contact number with the society guard.

For residential societies

Brief gate guards on visitor verification before the season begins. Every visitor, delivery person and domestic worker should be confirmed with the resident before entry and logged in the visitor register. Agree a process for handling parcels when residents are away.

Plan for community functions: designate parking, keep fire lanes clear and agree who manages crowd movement near stages and food counters. Increase night rounds when many flats are empty.

For shops and commercial premises

Busy markets bring more footfall and more opportunity for theft. Keep high-value items in view of staff, limit cash at counters and arrange secure closing procedures. Guards at entrances should be courteous but watchful, especially during peak evening hours.

Review CCTV coverage, lighting and shutter locks before the season, and keep emergency contact numbers displayed for staff.

Fire safety with lamps and fireworks

Diyas, candles, decorative lights and fireworks raise fire risk. Keep lamps away from curtains and flammable decorations, avoid overloading electrical sockets with festive lighting, and keep fire extinguishers accessible. Societies should agree on designated open areas for fireworks, away from parked vehicles and dry materials.

Make sure guards and residents know where fire equipment is kept and how to contact the fire service. Electrical faults should be handled by a qualified electrician, not by security staff.

Weddings and private functions

Wedding venues and lawns across Lucknow need controlled entry, parking management and a plan for gifts and valuables. Assign a trusted person to manage the gift area, and brief security personnel on the guest list, VIP movement and vendor entry.
